Atua
Marquesas Islands, Polynesia
The Atua were carved wooden images with overlarge heads, huge round eyes, arching brows, and a wide mouth. Worshipped for their superhuman abilities, they were placed at family shrines or sacred places in the mountainous interior of the islands.
