Bamana Mask
Mali; Guinea; Burkina Faso
Bamana Masks have head crests, elongated faces, and are decorated with metal incisions to represent scarification. Their mouths are small with raised lips to show the ability to keep secrets, and their downcast eyes show respect for the tribal elders. They are worn in adolescent boys’ initiation rites.
This entity appears in the story “13. African Newcomers”.
