Deangle Mask
Liberia; Côte d’Ivoire
Deangle Masks are worn by Dan women during dance rituals. With their oval faces, pointed chins, narrow eyes, long smooth foreheads, and slightly open mouths, the masks represent idealized feminine beauty, accented by fringed headdresses trimmed with prized cowrie shells. When the performances are taking place the wearers believe they turn into bush spirits.
This entity appears in the story “13. African Newcomers”.
