Iatmul Ancestor Mask
Papua New Guinea
The Iatmul Ancestor Mask is distinguished by its elongated nose, often extending from the chin to the head and almost separated from the rest of the face. Three birds depicting ancestor spirits are carved on the nose extension: like the mask face they are semi-abstract, but the eyes make them more easily recognizable.
This entity appears in the story “2. The Bitterness of the Masks”.
