The Islamic Prayer Mat is placed on the ground so nothing unclean can touch the worshipper (some countries add rose petals and find prayer beads help concentration). The niche at the top of the mat must be pointed to Mecca and indicates the place where the head rests when the body is prostrated during prayers.
