John the Baptist

Israel; Jordan

John the Baptist, mainly known for baptizing Jesus, is a popular subject for engravers and artists. Early Christians followed the Baptist’s act, and baptism became the dominant Christian sacrament. Jordan water, regarded as holy, was once carried in jars on rafts, but now more modern means of transport take it to believers all over the earth.
