La Pietà

The Pietà (“pity”), a sculpture by the Renaissance artist Michelangelo Buonarroti, is housed in St. Peter’s Basilica. It depicts the Virgin Mary cradling the dead body of Jesus and has been revered and admired worldwide for over 500 years.
