Ntomo Mask
Mali; Niger
The Ntomo Mask has magical qualities and is used in initiation ceremonies to prepare uncircumcised boys for adulthood. As they have to endure torture in complete silence, the mask is without a mouth. The horns are arranged like a comb and vary in number: five signify the boy is not yet circumcised.
This entity appears in the story “2. The Bitterness of the Masks”.
