Perahu Dukun
Brunei, Borneo
The Perahu Dukun is a symbolic coffin boat used to convey the deceased to the afterworld. The Sarawak hornbill (a bird whose strength is a symbol for a god) swallows the dead; the tribal ancestors seated in the middle are ready to help their relatives. A shaman steers the boat while ghosts watch underneath.
This entity appears in the story “23. Island Faiths”.
