Persephone, a Greek goddess, had been tricked into eating six pomegranate seeds when visiting Hades, the underworld of her husband. The Fates ruled that anyone who ate in Hades must remain there for eternity, but as she ate so little, she was allowed to spend half the year in Hades and the other half above ground.
