Pillars of Ashoka

The Pillars of Ashoka, a series of columns built at Buddhist monasteries, were erected by Emperor Ashoka during his reign (c. 268 – 232 BCE). The inscriptions refer to Ashoka as “Beloved of the Gods” and provide the first tangible evidence of Buddhism.
