Pope Francis was born in Argentina in 1936. The head of the Catholic Church, he is the first Pope from the Americas and the first from the Southern Hemisphere. He is noted for his emphasis on God’s mercy. “Who am I to judge?” (of someone being gay) he once asked. Often candles with his image are placed in the graffiti-laden slums of the world.
