Slit Gong

Slit Gong

Vanuatu

The Slit Gong, which can reach up to 14′, is one of the world’s largest freestanding musical instruments. It has the shape of a stylized ancestor figure with spirals depicting sacred pig tusks on the chin. The interior is hollowed out, and the long vertical slit represents the mouth, through which the ancestor’s “voice” emerges when the gong is played.

This entity appears in the story “3. Tribal Music”.
