Venus

Venus

Italy; Cyprus; Greece

Venus, born in Cyprus, the goddess of love and beauty in Ancient Greece, will be forever associated with the scallop shell, as she is posed on one in Botticelli’s “Birth of Venus,” a contender for the world’s most famous painting. Modern rivals of the goddess are known to place themselves in scallop shells in competition, but a glance at the Botticelli behind them says they have no hope.
