Zapotec Funerary Urn

Mexico

The Zapotec Funerary Urn is a receptacle, dating c. 200 – 700 CE, in which ancestors’ ashes were probably kept. The kneeling or sitting figure is usually of a god wearing a highly decorated mask much larger than the body, thus allowing the urn to be placed behind it and hidden from the front.

This entity appears in the story “17. The Calavera Enters”.
